Character Information
Fandom:Heroes Please detail links to canon characters: Richard is the firstborn son of Maria and Richard Sanders. Richard Sanders is actually Adam Monroe; Adam left Richard's family after discovering that he 'disliked children'. Full Name (including middle name): Richard Marcell Sanders Junior Nickname: Marcello (only from his mother) Age: 21 DOB: December 12, 1747 Sexuality: He hasn't had much time for either sex just yet. Occupation: Footsoldier for the British Light Infantry Clothing: (What do they normally wear?) Whatever he's given - army-issue clothing. When he arrives in the 'modern' world he's going to have to adjust and will probably end up wearing nearly the same thing every day out of habit. Appearance: (Height, eye colour, hair colour, tattoos, scars, etc) Although considered to be 'short' in modern terms, Richard is just barely 5'7" and is actually verging on tall for a man of his era. He has blue eyes and blond hair, much like his father. He has various scars from his work with the British Army on his chest and back.
PB: Shawn Ashmore Journal:figliodelpadre and figliodelpadre
Any special abilities: As of now, Richard has discovered he's got the power of disintegration. It requires him to have prolonged contact with whatever he's trying to 'disintegrate' and for the present it's not a very serious threat -- he'll leave patches of disintegrated skin and flesh wherever his hands touch, but his own palms will take a beating as well. He'll learn to control it eventually, but for now it's an involuntary response to intense anger or stress. In beings with supernatural healing talents, it's likely that any wounds inflicted by Richard will heal at least slightly slower than run-of-the-mill injuries.
Personality: (strengths, weaknesses, general character traits) Richard spent much of his life supporting his mother. As a result, he has a tendency toward extreme responsibility and doesn't like to take handouts from other people even when he knows that the situation would be improved by a second party. He's very loyal to his mother and doesn't trust older men -- he believes that, like his father, they will abandon him. He tries to keep himself very clean and abstains from casual sex unlike some of the other troops; he doesn't want to become ill like his brother. Richard exists on the bare minimum necessary and doesn't indulge in luxuries often. He's generally good-tempered and friendly once someone wins his trust, but that takes a substantial amount of effort.
Any psychological problems and the reasons for them: Richard doesn't like to trust older men (and this sometimes causes problems in the military). He has on rare occasions mistrusted someone to the point of paranoia, but after being abandoned by his father, can you really blame him?"
Likes: Order, his mother, writing letters, Italian, promises being kept Dislikes: Irresponsibility, dry bread, people who try to be father-figures. Talents or skills: Trained to use a musket, speaks both English and Italian fluently. Dab-hand at cooking and basic housework.
History: The earliest memory that Richard has is of his father. Unfortunately, it's of the man leaving -- he barely recalls the details now, but they were vivid enough to cause nightmares for him once. His father slipped out of the house after leaving a few bags of coins on the table where they ate all their meals and until the next morning when Richard discovered his father really was gone he'd been sure that he'd dreamed the whole thing. He was nearly five at the time, and his younger brother had only just turned two. Although the coins that his father left sustained the family for a few months, his brother fell ill after a shortage of grain . His mother was thus unable to work and the family fell into disarray -- his brother passed away not too long after that and neither he nor his mother ever fully recovered from the blow it dealt to their family. He spent the next bit of his life working in a factory in his hometown of Milan, Italy ... and when he turned fourteen his mother had him sent to England to work in the Light Infantry. He didn't want to leave his mother, but she insisted.
Richard found that his ability to take orders (whether he liked the thought of it or not) afforded him an advantage in the ranks and he managed to make a fair salary. Every penny he could he sent back to his mother, and he wrote her letters frequently to keep her up-to-date on him, not wanting her to think he too had abandoned her. He stayed relatively low in the ranks and saw little action until he was sixteen and was then sent to a few low-key scuffles the British were having with the Spaniards. It is just after this period of action when he's about twenty-one that he's brought to Prideview. Let the technical inabilities begin! ... at least he speaks English.
First Person Writing Sample: Dear madre,
I know that your English is not so good, but I think I need some more practice writing in it so I will try to keep things simple. It is not so hard to be here as it was when I first came, but I still miss you more every day that I do not see your face. The general says that if I am very well behaved then perhaps I will be allowed to visit in the fall, but I fear that this is an empty promise and have not put my hopes into it. I know that you are recieving my payments and I hope that they are serving you well. Please do not hesitate to send word if you need more. I will find a way to the money. I wish you as always the best and hope that some day soon you will find the peace that we have both been seeking.
I love you always and remain your tireless servant, Marcello
Third Person Writing Sample: Richard arose from his sleep with a furrow of his brows to discover his mother tugging at his arm, urging him to put on his best clothes and hurry to market. It didn't make any sense - he never went to market before daybreak and always wore the clothes that would bring in the most money - a torn pair of trousers and a shirt that was yellow-beige with sweat and who knew what else. It was an outfit that he hated and it made his skin crawl to think about it, but it brought food to their table and that was the important thing. He let his mother shove him into the uncomfortable, itchy wool slacks and ate the scrap of bread that she shoved at him, stretching his lanky limbs as she pulled him out the door.
It wasn't until he saw the large man in the bright red uniform in front of him that he fully understood. He clung onto his mother's arm and cried without shame, large tears rolling down his cheeks. His mother drew him into her arms and kissed his forehead while she told him about what wonderful opportunities he would have and he settled; he resolved then to send money back to his mother so that she would have all the fine things that she deserved but had been deprived of by the cruel man who had left them alone.
The ride in the carriage was one of the longest of his life even after he allowed himself to surrender to sleep. Later he would curse himself for not staying awake, as he could not even imagine how to return home ... and that was perhaps the most frightening of all.
